Abstract

Relic is a short game exploring the vital role of soundscapes in creating the affect of horror. Entering the game, the player is guided by sound, wandering in a dark warehouse and tasked with appeasing its spirits. After an initial contact with the relic, the player is given 2 minutes to find 5 lost objects and return them before they are consumed by the dark, joining the other lost souls. The project serves as a commentary on current trends of the horror genre in film and game. The modern emphasis on visual scares often overlooks the power of soundscapes, limiting how effectively these mediums can evoke emotional responses in their audiences. Relic aims to build tension and anxiety without relying heavily on visual effects, demonstrating how moving away from jump scares and other overt visuals can strengthen horror storytelling.
