My Room is an interactive installation that creates a soft, utopian space where people can experience and appreciate the beauty of the female body without judgment. Blending physical materials and AR technology, the project reimagines body representation through warmth, intimacy, and sensory engagement, offering an alternative to societal pressures and objectification.

Abstract

My Room is an immersive mixed-media installation that imagines a world where the female body is free from judgment, objectification, and scrutiny. In today’s media landscape—especially in China—women’s bodies are frequently sexualized and distorted under the influence of online beauty standards. Building on research from last semester on the representation of female bodies in China’s new media, My Room shifts the conversation from critique to imagination, offering a soft, speculative alternative.

Combining handcrafted fabric dolls, layered AR animations, and tactile materials like cotton, yarn, and gentle textiles, the project invites viewers into a safe, private space where softness is not weakness, but power. Instead of confronting visitors with what’s broken, My Room allows them to briefly step into a future where beauty is accepted as it is—ordinary, present, and unpoliced.

The AR animations, designed in After Effects with a layered approach, enhance the surreal, dreamlike quality of the environment. Accessible through a simple QR code, the interactive elements blur physical and digital space, reinforcing the installation’s intimate tone. In imagining a future where all bodies are seen without expectation or shame, My Room reclaims softness as both refuge and resistance.
