Build Your Own Virtual Tunnel poster

This workshop will introduce the basic steps of setting up your own “virtual tunnel” to be part of a remote network from your own physical location and IP address (aka., setting up your own Virtual Private Network / Proxy). With the virtual tunneling, we learn to mask ourselves to be from within the other network that’s distant from ours, in order to perform in a different identity, bypass emerging geo-blocks, and experiment with other alternative purposes and DIY tactics you could imagine for. This workshop is also a preparation for an “exit plan” for those hopping in and out of the NYU Shanghai network (particularly welcome seniors!). We will start with a co-reading exercise and discussion on tunneling and proxying, followed by building our own “virtual tunnel” tools, and ending with your own imaginations for what such “virtual tunnel” experience can be created for.

Hosted by IMA Teaching Associate Cecilia Hua and GPS Post-doc Júlia Irion Martins.
