Stupid Hackathon - Shanghai is a hackathon event focusing on the generation of ideas and prototypes that are unusual, unnecessary, impractical, and/or stupid, using the tools and skills students have acquired through their coursework in Interactive Media Arts or Computer Science, for example.Students attending the mixed-mode event will work individually or in teams of up to 4 over a period of 12 hours to generate such ideas, after which each group will present what they have come up with. The event will end with a celebration of the sheer amount of stupidity generated by the participants throughout the event. The first Stupid Hackathon was held at the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at the Tisch School of Arts in New York University. The event has attracted much media attention for its unconventional premise and format. Since then independently organised stupid hackathons have been held in dozens of cities around the world, including Berlin, London, San Francisco, and Honolulu. Stupid Hackathon - Shanghai was the first of its kind in Asia that occurred in 2017.
