We are excited to invite all IMA students to an info session in Studio 1 on Monday 23rd September at 12.30-13.15 pm. During this session, our artists and researchers in residence Solveig Suess & Laura Tripaldi will introduce their current projects, offering students the opportunity to apply as research assistants. These positions will be compensated.

Solveig’s Project

Solveig’s research at NYU Shanghai is a continuation of her film, Holding Rivers, Becoming Mountains, set along the Mekong River and within the downstream politics of hydroelectric development, in which the river becomes a device to understand a series of infrastructural transformations between China and Southeast Asia.

Student Researcher 01: Film Editing & 3D Modeling

  • Collaborate with me on film editing for various upcoming art exhibitions.
  • Experiment with speculative hydrological narratives using 3D modeling software.

Desired Skills:

  • A creative approach to topics in Science and Technology and expanded documentary film.
  • Proficiency in 3D animation software.
  • Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing.

Student Researcher: Research & Fieldwork Support

  • Assist with research by building a database focused on the Mekong or Lancang River in Yunnan province, energy geopolitics, and media.
  • Help prepare for future fieldwork, including location scouting, contacting institutions, and mini-research trips.

Desired Skills:

  • A passion for archival and historical research, with an interest in environmental issues.
  • Experience working with people from diverse disciplines.
  • A connection to Yunnan province is a bonus.

 

Laura’s Project

Building on the research published in her book Parallel Minds (Urbanomic, 2022), and leveraging new materialist thinking, cybernetic and post-cybernetic theories, as well as philosophy of mind, Laura's project will explore the cognition and agency of technological artifacts, ranging from nanorobots to biological computers and beyond.

Overall goals:

  • Support research on emerging soft technologies by identifying and studying new discoveries.
  • Assist with interviews of scientists, technologists, and artists working at the forefront of soft technology.
  • Join on field trips to biotechnology, nanotechnology, and materials science labs at NYU and other institutions in Shanghai.
  • Develop speculative narratives on future technologies using creative writing, speculative design, and generative AI tools.

Desired Skills/Interests:

  • A strong interest in science and technology.
  • Experience with academic paper reading.
  • Interest in building connections with scholars across disciplines.
  • Familiarity with GenAI art (e.g. Midjourney, Stable Diffusion) and creative writing.
