Abstract
SONDER: Unmaking A Stranger aims to create a visualization of how strangers encounter barriers in their interactions and perceptions of identities both online and in real life. Through film, the concept of "sonder" is expressed as the realization that people around you live intricate lives that mirror your own. Emphasizing the interconnectedness of people's lives, the project seeks to evoke a sense of sonder and realization through an immersive installation. The project intervenes in the larger context surrounding the representation of human connections in a digital age. To highlight the impact of individuals on each other's lives and the blurred boundaries between digital and real-world connections, the project creates an immersive art experience that engages the audience on a personal and emotional level. The purpose is to create an immersive experience that allows viewers to place themselves in the position of the subject, evoking a sense of sonder and interconnectedness. It aims to contribute to the debate on the impact of digital media on human connections and the representation of personal experiences in art. The general design of the project involves an immersive installation that utilizes a transparent screen and intentionally positioned chairs to create a visually understandable pathway towards the environment where viewers can witness the states of sonder. The installation is designed to evoke a sense of presence and self-reflection. The technical setup of the project includes the use of a transparent rear-projection film, a projector mounted on the ceiling, and speakers placed on either side of the screen to ensure equal volume for viewers. The placement of chairs facing each other and the use of a lamp to illuminate the viewers on either side contributes to the overall clarity of the experience. The reflected captions and the projection of the film onto an acrylic sheet to create an immersive and thought-provoking experience for the audience.
