Abstract
My investigation looks into the sensing ability of a smart city. According to philosopher Benjamin Bratton, a city is “smart” in its sentient nature, that is able to sense from the environment and make its reactions. Furthermore, Bratton suggests that, one day we may be able to see the vision of symbiosis in smart cities where the boundary between machines and nature becomes blurred. In this scenario, synthetic nature and artificial landscape emerged to support the distributed sensing and intuitively of a smart city. In order to present this, my capstone project is an installation of an interactive interface, representing a sentient, synthetic nature that could be implemented in any corner of a smart city, and create intuitive, automatic reactions to its nearby environment. The project is an attempt to visualize the sensing ability of a responsive sentient city. It focuses on physical and kinetic interactions, imagining a smart city as a being with its own agency, responding automatically to visitors.
