The Tie, tie childhood and adulthood for kidults.

Project Video

Abstract

The Tie is a project that investigates the intersection of fashion, technology, and identity-expression in "kidulting". Interactive experiences that let adults act like children are booming. Young people in the post-COVID-19 stage who must deal with the complexities of adult life, are trying to embrace "kidulting". Kidult is a compound word, combined with kid and adult. It used to be a sarcastic name for young people who didn't want to grow up. But now, it has become synonymous with creativity, childlike innocence, and empathy. The powerful appeal of kidulting media content to young people has become a profound and intriguing subject in the fields of media, psychology, and sociology. How does personal expression merge adulthood and the whimsy of childhood by digital technology? This project tries to tie adulthood and childhood through the daily accessory, finding a balance between them. The project is presented as a playable wearable tie, responsive to the wearer's mind and movements in a joyful way. It focuses on kinetic interaction and sound effect, awakening the wearer's inner child through a series of childish sounds and movements. The exaggerated size and furry touch aim to evoke the feeling of being a child and wearing adults' clothes. Beyond a mere accessory, this creation serves as a canvas for individual narratives, a playful companion fostering kidults' self-expression and social connections. It encourages young people to embrace their inner child, tieing adulthood and childhood through a tiny point.
