Foundations

IMA has four foundations: Interaction Lab, which focuses on interactive media and physical computing; Communications Lab, which concentrates on the production of images, audio, video, and the web; Creative Coding Lab, which focuses on the fundamentals of computation, software design, and web technologies, and What is New Media?, which focuses on the theoretical issues of emerging media.
IMB (Interactive Media and Business) introduces a fifth foundation, Applications Lab, focused on business applications.

Interaction Lab

Interaction Lab

In this course students will be asked to think beyond the conventional forms of human computer interaction (i.e. the keyboard and mouse) to develop interfaces that consider the entire body, the body’s capacity for gesture, as well as the relationship between the body and its environment. Students will learn the fundamentals of electronics and programming and will gain a deeper appreciation of the expressive possibilities of computation.

Communications Lab

Communications Lab

This foundation course is designed to provide students with a framework to effectively communicate through digital means. Students will explore the possibilities of digital media by successively producing traditional and experimental projects that make use of digital images, audio, video, and the Web through online and interactive media platforms.

Creative Coding Lab

Creative Coding Lab

Creative Coding Lab explores the fundamentals of computation, software design, and web technologies, through a series of creative projects, such as interactive application, generative art, data visualization. Within the framework of these creative projects students will develop a greater understanding of how computer programs operate, be exposed to various concepts used to create experiences and interactions, and become more familiar with some of the technologies that constitute the internet.

What is New Media?

What is New Media?

This course will explore the fundamentals of new media scholarship. Together, we will review and engage with different theories of emerging media in its social, cultural, political, and historical contexts. Students will be able to research, think and write critically about some of the central debates in media studies, including new media forms and aesthetics, issues of gender, race, and labor, platform, infrastructures and various emerging paradigms. Classes consist of theoretical readings, media example discussion, and writing workshops.

Application Lab

Application Lab

Application Lab is a project-based course where students ideate and develop small application prototypes and test them. The course is designed to take maximum advantage of NYU Shanghai’s small class sizes, location in mobile-first China, and the opportunities resulting from students and faculty working and learning together under pressure to deliver innovations that push against the frontiers of the recently possible.
