In response to the popular conception of the “immaterial” Internet, and “datafication” of all aspects of life, how might we rethink the materiality and environmentality of media in our research? This upper-level seminar will introduce students with various theoretical frameworks in media studies including new materialism, media archaeology, studies of media infrastructures and ecologies, cultural geographies and elemental media. Students are expected to critically assess the (geo)politics of material/environmental media, and to adopt a mix of these frameworks to develop a research project and essay.
