During the course, we will be unpacking the process of filmmaking as a critical practice for researching nascent world systems. Our classes will be learning from key practice-led researchers, intersectional feminists, experimental filmmakers, science and technologists, as guides when thinking about optics and positionality– where might we begin positioning ourselves, whether with a camera or in a world that is undergoing extreme change? In classes to follow, we will shuttle across scales from interior psyches to bodies of communities, the urban flows within China to interconnections across Southeast Asia, a single crop harvested to an entire supply chain landscape, macro particles of dust to entire weather systems— all the while asking, in what ways can moving image practices offer a conduit for ways to relate to the world differently?
