The IMA Artist in Residency is a year-long program in which artists and researchers are welcomed to join the Interactive Media Arts community as visiting faculty and explore all that NYU Shanghai has to offer. Residents work on a self-directed interdisciplinary research project during their time in Shanghai and teach one course per semester related to their research topic and their artistic or academic practice. The residents become an integral part of the IMA community working closely with faculty, students, and staff. They have access to the various IMA studios and labs (FabLab, Wood Shop, Emerging Media Studio, Lighting Studio, etc.) and are given their personal work and project space in the Research Studio. Residents are awarded a research fund to cover expenses related to their research project and are expected to involve students from across the university in their research. This residency offers ample opportunity to build connections throughout NYU Shanghai’s various programs and the NYU global network as well as with the Shanghai (media) arts community. The final public outcome of the residency can take on different forms such as workshops, lectures, and exhibitions.

The inaugural IMA Artists in Residence (’23-’24) are Dennis de Bel and Lei Ban.
