Synthetic Media Guest Talk: Vassilis Galanos poster

Lecture Info: In this previously unpublished work, the presenter will suggest that the vast majority of contemporary generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) art is kitsch. Dr Galanos will demonstrate aspects of visual AI’s last ten years of development as a sociotechnical construct, a combination of technical programming corresponding to social factors. He will argue that the driving force behind the entropic proliferation of (Gen)AI kitsch is an interplaying function of schizo-capitalist regimes promoting double binds of (a) regulatory frameworks containing AI within hegemonic political correctness and (b) nationalist mandates for AI innovation.

Presenter Info: Dr Vassilis Galanos is currently a Research and Teaching Fellow at the Edinburgh College of Art, affiliated with the Bridging Responsible Artificial Intelligence Divides (BRAID) UK research programme and the Edinburgh Futures Institute’s Data Civics and The New Real themes. Vassilis investigates AI from a historical and sociological perspective, and has recently participated in projects involving the use of generative AI in journalism, community-led data-driven innovation, and artist/data scientist interactions.
