EmotiDance Studio is a motion-based emotional tracing system that transforms a dancer’s movement and sound into live visual notations—inviting both dancers and non-dancers to explore a new perspective on embodied emotion without relying on music or choreography.

Abstract

EmotiDance Studio is an interactive system that visualizes movement and sound to make emotion perceptible in dance. It responds to a common disconnection between dancers and audiences—where internal emotional experiences are often not fully understood by viewers. Inspired by embodied cognition, which sees thinking as rooted in bodily experience, the project explores how movement can carry emotional meaning beyond language. Drawing from John Cage’s experimental notation and color-emotion theory, the system transforms real-time motion and audio into abstract 3D traces. Shape and color are used to express emotion; line thickness and particle bursts respond to volume and intensity. Rather than rejecting choreography or over-relying on technology, the project offers a new perspective for both dancers and non-dancers—inviting them to experience dance as an emotional and perceptual process, not just performance.
