He doesn't really have to be an artist.
None of the decisions he made while doing so were rationally driven. He follows his body, his desires, his instincts. He tried, but it got him lost. He fears being out of control, he searches for it, he stays out of control. He suspects his surroundings without reason, yet he deeply loves the mundanity that surrounds him. He obsesses over loss because he doesn't have the courage to stay. And he's obsessed with the past, with the nights that won't be bright.
其实他并不用是一个艺术家。
他在做这些时,所做的任何决定都不是理性驱使的。
Ban Lei was born in Shanghai in 1990. He is a musician and visual artist. After training as a classical musician and a career in new technologies, Ban Lei has moved away from pre-existing musical rules, equipment for expected use, and electronic sound effects in order to obtain an “objective” or “neutral” creative context. He makes his own musical instruments, mainly out of wood—inspired by nature (trees, plants, wind, rhythm)— which he plays alone or in groups. For him, the instrument is part of the musician’s body. This practice has enabled him to master every aspect of the work process: inspiration, concept, technique, manufacture, adjustment, performance, and public sharing.
